Leaving your comfort zone can expand your experiences and lead to real change. Most of us rarely leave our comfort zones.
We repeat the same activities, creating conditions that are comfortable and familiar to us.
Unfortunately, life does not change until our actions do.
New experiences often take you outside of your present comfort zone.
This is quite the conundrum, given that humans are inherently drawn to comfort.
Comfort and progress appear to be mutually exclusive.
Personal development is for the brave.
Take New Actions and Make Changes in Your Life:
1. Diversify your media habits. Read a book that you wouldn’t typically read. Listen to a new style of music.
Watch a film or television show that you would never have considered before. Change things up a little by viewing and listening to something fresh.
2. Explore new foods. Have you ever eaten Vietnamese or Korean food? Pick up the yellow pages and look for a new restaurant.
It is uncomfortable to explore new foods. That is precisely the objective. Learn to manage with minor discomfort.
3. Change your other routines. Try being vegan for a week or waking up two hours earlier. Take the bus downtown rather than driving.
Meditate every evening for a month. For one week, avoid procrastinating. Take up some new activities.
4. Try a comfort zone challenge. This has become a popular idea. The sole objective of a comfort zone exercise is to strengthen your resilience to social judgment.
You gain courage and confidence, but never put yourself in genuine danger. Some instances include:
• Lie down on the sidewalk for 30 seconds in a crowded city.
• Sing your favorite song aloud at the grocery store.
• Walk through the mall wearing your shirt backwards.
• Start a conversation with an attractive man or woman.
• Make a smiling face on your forehead and wander around town.
5. Implement modest adjustments. Big changes are frightening. Make a little adjustment in your life and push it a bit further each week.
If you’re terrified of heights, peek out the second-story window. Next week, try the third floor.
Several modest improvements are just as beneficial as one major one. This is easier than the comfort zone challenge but considerably slower.
6. Recognize the rewards of stepping outside your comfort zone. According to studies, peak productivity and performance occur when stress levels are low to moderate.
Stress improves our focus and performance. Being overly comfy actually generates problems.
Learn to manage stress and uncertainty. You’ll be better able to manage stress when it occurs naturally if you intentionally push yourself.
7. Visit a new location. Spend one night in a new town. Try to camp in the mountains. Rent an RV for the week.
Alternatively, visit the mom-and-pop grocery store on the other side of town instead of the big-box store down the street.
8. Develop the ability to tolerate discomfort. Being uncomfortable is not always a valid reason not to undertake anything.
Learn yoga, meditation, or another stress-reduction practice. Use it whenever you are feeling pressured. It won’t be long before you can try new things boldly.
Find New Experiences!
Step outside of your comfort zone and experience life from a new viewpoint. If you allow your comfort zone to trap you, it will do so.
It is possible to live beyond your present habits. A little daring can transform your life.
Try out some new things and see what happens. It’s okay to feel uncomfortable.
You’ll push your comfort zone in ways you never thought possible.
