One beautiful tradition that captures this sense of reflection and intention is The Ritual of 13 Wishes, rooted in an ancient custom celebrated during the Rauhnächte, the mystical nights between Christmas and Epiphany.

As the year draws to a close, many of us naturally begin to reflect on what went well, what didn’t, and what we hope the future might bring.
This ritual invites you to slow down, get honest with your heart, and send your deepest hopes out into the universe. But it also gives you a framework for bringing intention and clarity into your year ahead.
What Are the Rauhnächte and the 13 Wishes Ritual?
The Rauhnächte are twelve holy nights traditionally observed between December 25th and January 5th.
They are thought to symbolise the twelve months of the coming year and serve as a time for reflection, cleansing, and setting intentions.
Amid these nights, the 13 Wishes Ritual is a simple yet meaningful practice. You write down 13 wishes for yourself, one for each night, plus one extra, and each night, you release one symbolically.
How to Prepare Your 13 Wishes
Before the ritual really begins, take time to reflect on your past year. Sit down in a quiet space, perhaps with a candle, your favourite music, and a cup of tea.
Think about what you want to carry forward, grow into, or transform in the year ahead.
- Write each wish on its own small piece of paper.
- Use the present tense — as if what you wish has already begun to unfold.
- Focus on wishes for yourself.
Once you have all 13 written, fold each piece so the words are hidden, then place them in a jar, bowl, or box.
The Ritual: Burning, Releasing, and Receiving
Starting at midnight on December 25th, you’ll perform a nightly ritual. Each evening, take one wish from your jar without reading it, and burn it safely in a fireproof dish.
Each burned wish is released to a higher power, the universe, to be transformed and taken care of.
You continue this for twelve nights. On January 5th, when only one paper remains, you open it and read the final wish aloud.
This thirteenth wish is yours to claim, nurture, and take active steps toward fulfilling in your own life.
Why This Ritual Matters
The magic of the 13 wishes goes beyond symbolic burning; it’s a practice of presence.
Writing your wishes helps you clarify what truly matters. The ritual keeps you connected to your intentions during a transitional time of year.
And the 13th wish reminds you that while support can come from many places, you play an active role in shaping your future.
Whether you follow this as a spiritual tradition, a mindful year‑end exercise, or a cozy family activity, the 13 Wishes Ritual offers a meaningful way to close out the old and welcome the new with intention and heart.
