When we find ourselves in a position where we have more money than we require, our human nature compels us to buy more things than we truly require.

Let’s face it. You can prevent unnecessary expenditures and save money if you limit your shopping to necessities only.

When one purchases foodstuffs and other goods, there is frequently a substantial amount of waste.

To prevent food waste at home, you should only buy what you require on each shopping trip.

Consume exactly the right amount of what you’ve purchased so that it lasts for twice as long.

5. Car Share

Carpooling is one of the most discussed, but also one of the least utilized, methods for reducing day-to-day costs associated with leading an independent life.

If other parents in your neighborhood send their children to the same school as your children, then this could make sense.

Here are some reasons why you might consider carpooling:

• Could you arrange for each family to take turns driving the children to school? One week it is your turn, and the next, the other parents.
• Would you like to save a few bucks by reducing the amount of gas you use each day?
• Wouldn’t it be wise to invest those gas money savings somewhere else?

Besides carpooling, you might want to consider car share companies. These are available in a lot of cities in North America.

I used a company called Modo. It’s a co-op, and to join, I paid a one-time redeemable share purchase of $500.

The cost to “rent” a car is $4.00 an hour ($48 for 24 hours) and you don’t pay for gas, insurance, roadside assistance, maintenance, and cleaning.

Check your local listings for car share companies such as Zip Car, which is available in many cities.

These suggestions are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the myriad of ways in which you can reduce living costs.

If you look carefully around your house, you should be able to discover an additional five or six ways that you can reduce monthly living costs and save money.

It’s a lot less difficult than you might imagine!

And consider this: the additional money you save as a result of changing your habits can be deposited into some kind of account that offers interest.

You might as well make money for yourself at the same time!
